Backstage & Influences

Chipotle? Pizza? Study More Applications?

8:30 AM: we reach my workplace (lets be truthful, cubicle) to start could work day. I start my outlook, read new email messages, and respond to nearly all of them (some will need some additional attention later in the time.) I’m very close to finishing my one cup of coffee for the afternoon.

8:45-9:00 AM: I open three windows: 1) the internet, 2) our own USC internal database, and 3) my grade point average (GPA) calculator. We utilze the internet to see the Application that is common database to keep records of everything, and just because it sounds, the GPA calculator to determine GPAs. I’m always very happy once I see an entire scholastic history. USC asks candidates to record their classes and grades by topic (English, math, language, social sciences etc…) so that it’s obvious the classes a student took in ninth through eleventh grade. I’m also able to see the grades in a clear and way that is organized. We begin reading applications.

9:01 AM: Someone just started dealing with fantasy football. As a first time player, this immediately catches my attention (I became eliminated in the first round of playoffs after investing the entire period as quantity one in my own league of sixteen players…just sayin…) I battle to stay focused but my stength is still strong this at the beginning of the morning.

9:02 AM 12:00 PM: I continue reading… the thing that is first look at in a pupil’s application is their first and second choice major (primarily because it is the first thing I see when we start an application.) I then browse academics, including standardized test scores and the history that is academic. Next we’ll have a look at most of the qualitative aspects: short answer questions, essays, and activity section (helpful hint: always spell out acronyms wherever you utilize them. We do not know most of the scheduled programs available in your school or community.) I’ll put the application up with letter of recommendation shmoop.pro. Some pupils may also have additional information or interview reports, which I’ll constantly read final. While I’m reading everything, I’ll take down notes as we go. A number of us will read the application that is whole then take notes, but personally, I like to compose when I get. We find I’m more thorough that way even though it might take a bit longer general. Generally speaking, my notes will describe each portion i have read drawing a conclusion that will help me understand the learning student once I come back to the application later on.

9:45 AM: we think about when and the things I’m going to eat for meal.

10:30 AM: Chipotle? Pizza?

11:30 AM: Or can I be healthy and consume a salad? Decisions decisions….

12 PM: LUNCH TIME!!!

12:45 PM: right back to applications…. this pupil is acquiesced by me! We met with them when I became visiting a college in Virginia. He told me he was going to publish about program he began at their school…turned out great!

Sometime into the afternoon: I’ll answer the phone, respond to emails as they appear in (we attempt to respond to you as soon as I can,) and take a few water breaks.

4:00/30 I’ll try to wrap up reading applications for your day and spend the hour that is last whatever else requires tending to (like writing this web site.) Often I’ll have a conference in the or afternoon so this portion of my day can vary in timing morning. But on a typical day, I spend this time at the end.

5:00 PM: Time for you to go home and play with my new puppy. She’s the one within the photo just in case you were wondering! 🙂

Counselor on Contact

It’s morning and I’m arriving to work wednesday. Instead of heading to my office, I head to the Admission Center because We am ‘on contact.’ What does that mean exactly? Well, about once a month, it’s my responsibility to sit within the admission center, provide the admission presentations, and answer any questions from students who drop by. ( it means I have an excuse to get Coffee Bean because it’s in the same building.)

8:00 a.m. After grabbing my café vanilla, I really do an email that is quick and check my teeth before you go into the presentation space. Since is Wednesday, I will give the 8:30 am and 12:30 pm Meet USC presentations today. This one-hour presentation is our most comprehensive system that delivers a USC overview as well as information on the admission process. Perhaps you’ve been to at least one! Generally, there is a lot of questions, mostly from parents, until students feel more comfortable (do not be afraid to inquire of questions, I’m literally there all day to talk to you.)

9:30 a.m. When the presentations are over I’ll return to the counselor desk and visitors take a 90-minute tour with a student tour-guide. Our tour guides are so eager and willing to keep in touch with students that are prospective families. We always speak to our tour guides and admission ambassadors. They’re usually extremely students that are involved often tell us about their internships and jobs, so that it’s helpful to hear their perspective. A lot of times, they are a big source of information for us on current pupil life.

10:00 a.m. Between presentations, I am typically jumping between talking to students that are prospective parents and doing whatever work is needed of me that day. During this particular time associated with the year, that means reviewing applications and answering emails. Because your admission that is specific counselor not be accessible, the counselor assigned to the Admission Center for the time is there to field any concerns. Some days are super busy and a line builds up, other days are light and I can invest a few minutes that are extra to students, but I’ll always make yes to be helpful and answer as many questions as I can.

12:00ish. Whenever I can, I run outside to grab a quick lunch. The closest options to the Admission Center are all the places in the Tutor Campus Center like Lemonade, Panda Express and Seeds Marketplace. Today, we think I’ll go with Lemonade’s avocado and tomato salad and some pesto pasta (if you haven’t tried it, you’re missing out).

3:00 p.m. Every once in a while, students will ask me if we can talk privately at the counselor desk. If there’s not just a line, We’m happy to aid and respect your confidentiality, but students should understand that this is not an appointment and I also likely won’t have the ability to spend lots of time in one-on-one conversations away from the main desk. If the information is highly relevant to the application and you wants those reviewing it to keep it in mind, we are going to always suggest that you call or email your admission that is specific therapist.

5:00 p.m. Time to close the Admission Center. Sometimes it is a day that is exhausting other times it’s pretty peaceful, but either way, being the therapist on contact allows us a chance to interact with students and families and really get to make use of the ‘counselor’ part of our title. It’s always nice to learn you helped someone get an improved knowledge of the admission process.

So, ethical of the tale: us; we are happy to help if you have general questions about applying to USC or your application and you’ll be on campus, please stop by and see! In reality, while on contact, it is our job to aid! However, if there’s one thing personal you would like to discuss, or you believe you will need time for the more explanation that is in-depth discussion, call your admission counselor; they have been also thrilled to assist and will dedicate the appropriate timeframe to your questions.
